These sum up our love of stationary, the written word and drawn image. And, of course, they too are disposable! If I’m honest, I’ve struggled to find decent alternatives, however, there are a few. Only the top one closes the loop. The others merely reduce waste.

• Remarkable have been making stationary from recycled materials for some years.

• Another option is one of those multi-colour click-down biros. You get 4 or more pens for the plastic waste of one there.

• We have not yet tried these, but the Eco Fountain Pen looks like a nice idea. A good, normal fountain pen will also last you years, and the ink cartridges create less waste than throwing away countless biros.
